“It
often strikes me that the process of painting is rather like a
journey through life. It begins with a general, optimistic projection
of what’s to come and after an odyssey of triumphs, and
set backs; deep frustration and elation - and luck (bad and good)
- one ends with a canvas: battle-scarred, and deep, and triumphant.
Not remotely like the naive projections at its inception but far,
far richer for all the labour and the heartache.
At the beginning of my book Paths To Enlightenment,
I quoted these words from the poet Antonio Machado and they apply
equally well to my art:
Wanderer there is no path,
The path is made by walking”
